Itinerary

1
Day 1, Thursday, New York/Madeira

Depart New York JFK International Airport via Azores Airlines’ new non-stop direct trans-Atlantic flight to Madeira island (about a 6-hour flight). Madeira is an autonomous region of Portugal, and an archipelago comprising seven islands, two of which are inhabited, off the northwest coast of Africa.

2
Day 2, Friday, Arrive Madeira

Arrive at Funchal, the capital of Madeira. Upon arrival you are greeted and transferred to your hotel. (Hotel do Carmo/Castanheiro Boutique Hotel/Savoy Palace)

3
Day 3, Saturday

Madeira, the “floating garden,” or the “pearl of the Atlantic,” is a unique subtropical paradise in the Atlantic Ocean with dramatic and breathtaking scenery (35.4 miles long/13.7 miles wide). Its mild climate, average temperatures of 77-degree Fahrenheit in the summer and 63-degrees in the winter, make it the ideal island for a relaxing or active break at any time of the year. Madeira’s lush vegetation hides the fascinating indigenous Laurel Forest, a UNESCO Nature World Heritage Site since 1999.

Funchal, the capital city and its bay, where architecture and nature are charmingly combined, invites you for a delightful stroll, discovering the narrow traffic-free streets paved with black and white mosaics and lined by jacaranda trees. In the old town, the Farmer’s Market offers you a display of the great variety of local flowers, fruit and vegetables, the result of Madeira’s rich volcanic soil. Madeira is known for its namesake wine and warm, subtropical climate. The main island of Madeira is volcanic, green and rugged, with high cliffs, pebbly beaches and settlements on deltas of the Fajã River. Capital Funchal has botanic gardens and is known for its harbor and a large New Year's fireworks show.
Included: Half-Day Morning Funchal Walking Tour:  09:15 am – 01:15 pm
An excellent introduction to the island’s capital Funchal! Accompanied by our English-speaking guide, we start with a stroll through the hustle and bustle of the Farmers Market and the Old Town. Discover the display of subtropical fruits, vegetables, flowers and fish. We continue our walk on the paved pedestrian lanes towards the Cathedral and the Municipal Gardens. Finish this tour in style by tasting 2 types of Madeira wines at the old Madeira Wine Lodge. Learn why the wine is so special and well known! A glass of Madeira Wine was used to toast the inauguration of George Washington in 1789, and Thomas Jefferson toasted with it in 1792 when he decided to locate the US Capitol in Washington! Return to the hotel. Rest of the day at leisure.

4
Day 4, Sunday

After breakfast at the hotel, enjoy another half-day activity that is included, Dolphin Watching by Boat.
09:00 am – 11:30 am (no transportation is included – only 15 minute-walk from hotel to the Marina)
If you enjoy the ocean fresh breeze and would like to see the Madeiran coast from a different angle, we invite you to go on a private half day boat trip. Observe dolphins and whales in their natural habitat from a rib boat, accompanied by a marine biologist. Throughout the year one is able to see 28 different species of cetaceans just off the south coast of Madeira.
The rest of the day is free.

5
Day 5, Monday – Day 8, Thursday

Four more days to enjoy the romantic island of Madeira. Diving, surfing, canyoning, walking in the mountains or by the sea, are just some of the possible activities to enjoy on this island. Swimming in the ocean or in natural rock pools, strolling through colorful gardens, tasting the well-known Madeira fortified wine and trying the traditional gastronomy will fill your senses and create a happy state of mind.

6
Day 9, Friday – Madeira/New York
