Itinerary

Itinerary

Day 1 – New York/Bergen
Depart from New York City via Norwegian Air to Bergen, gateway to the fjords of Norway.

Day 2 - Bergen
Arrive at Bergen Airport and pick up your rental car. Drive to the center of the city and check in to your hotel. The rest of the day you are at leisure to discover Bergen, Norway’s second largest city. Enjoy all the charm and beauty of the city. (Clarion Havnekontoret)

Day 3 - Bergen
Enjoy a full day in Bergen at your leisure. Recommended visits include the fish and flower market, as well as the Floibanen funicular, which takes you up to a height of 1,050 feet above sea level. Bergen is a city with a lot of tradition and young spirit. (B)

Day 4 – Bergen/Lofthus (101 miles)
After breakfast today, start your journey eastward to Lofthus. Follow the road along the spectacular Hardanger Fjord, which is on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. The fjord is also famous for its fruit orchards along the way. Blossom time is one of the most stunning periods. (Ullensvang) (B)

Day 5 – Lofthus/Voss/Marifjora (134 miles)
After breakfast, continue your drive up to Voss and then to Aurland.  The mountain road between Aurland and Laerdal is normally open from June to mid-October. From Aurland to the Stegastein viewpoint, the road is open year round. The Aurland – Laerdal – Aurlandsfjellet crossing is about 4,285 feet at its highest point. The contrasts between the fjord and the high mountain region, where show lies on the ground for most of the year, are compelling. The road is also called “the snow road,” since you can see snow along the road for most of the summer. After Laerdal, cross the Sognefjord by ferry and reach Sogndal. Your accommodations are in Marifjora, a lovely small village next to the fjord with a beautiful view. (Torvis) (B)

Day 6 – Marifjora/Geiranger (128 miles)
Leaving Marifjora today, you can catch a glimpse of towering mountains in the distance as the road slowly ascends through the valley. Northern Europe’s highest mountain pass, the road makes its way up to the summit at 4,704 feet. Continue along the scenic road and arrive in Geiranger, where you board a 1-1/2 hour cruise on the Geirangerfjord, known as the pearl of the fjords. (Union Geiranger) (B)

Day 7 – Geiranger/Molde (66 miles)
After breakfast at the hotel, proceed with your journey along Eagle’s road. A short ferry crossing from Eidsdal to Linge (not included) will bring you to the famous trolls’ road, Trollstigen. The road is considered to be one of the most scenic in Norway with eleven meandering stretches. Cross between Afarnes and Solsnes (not included) until you reach Molde, located on the Romsdalfjord and known as the city of the roses. (Scandic Seilet) (B)

Day 8 – Molde/Trondheim (136 miles)
Contnue your journey to Trondheim, Norway’s third largest city, today. Weather permitting, drive along the coastal road to discover the beautiful Atlantic Road until you reach Kristiansund. Make one ferry crossing and one tunnel crossing (not included) to arrive in Trondheim, an urban center with everything the big city can offer, yet with small-town friendliness. A visit to Nidaros Cathedral, built over the grave of St. Olav, is recommended. Next to the cathedral, see the Archbishop’s Palace, Scandinavia’s oldest secular building. Other sights of interest are Kristiansten Fortress, the Monk’s Island, Trondelag Open Air Museum and Stiftsgarden (the Royal Residence in Trondheim). Stroll along Bakklandet, located on the east bank of the river Nid. Here you will find buildings that were formerly worker’s dwellings but have now been partly restored as homes or charming shops and restaurants. (Clarion Bakeriet) (B)

Day 9 – Trondheim/Oslo
After breakfast, drive to the airport and return your rental car. Fly to Oslo, Norway’s capital. On arrival, transfer on your own to your hotel. (Continental) (B)

Day 10 – Oslo
A day at leisure offers the opportunity to explore this cosmopolitan hub, a city of stunning natural beauty, rich culture, and a relaxed atmosphere. Oslo’s many well-known sights include Vigeland Sculpture Park, the Viking ship museum, the folk museum, the opera house and Holmenkollen ski jump. The city is relatively compact and is easy to explore on foot, while its thriving nightlife means that you will have plenty of entertainment to choose from after sunset. (B)

Day 11 – Oslo/USA
Transfer to the airport on your own for your Norwegian Air flight to the US. Arrive the same day. (B)

Europcar rental rates 7-day rates include a compact, 4-door automatic shift car, taxes, loss damage waiver (LDW), unlimited miles, location surcharge, and AutoPass equipment charge. Not included in the rates are toll road passings, additional driver charge, and supercollision damage waiver (SCDW).
